Step Two: Understand The Problem

Failure of your heat and/or A/C in your Jeep Grand Cherokee is due to the failure of your blend door.

Heater Treater replaces the cheap, plastic blend door with steel. Replacing the blend door with the same plastic part from the manufacturer WILL result in continued problems — the same system design problem that caused the failure in the first place WILL happen again.

Heater Treater attacks the root cause of the failure by constructing hardware that is designed to meet the rigors of normal operation of the HVAC system, and last for the life of the Jeep.

Do you have the problem?

The usual symptom is an inability to effectively control the temperature in your car. Note that this symptom can also be caused by a bad temp control knob, and this is a common failure on Ford trucks. Please check carefully before considering the blend door fix.

The blend door hangs on a vertical axis, so turning a sharp corner, or fiddling with the fan speed can swing the door into the hot or cold position randomly. While the symptoms are fairly conclusive for blend door failure, the only way to really check it out is to remove the blend door actuator motor and look at the axle.

Another reported symptom is a clicking sound coming from the actuator motor. This occurs when the motor gears get out of alignment and are slipping against each other, making the noise. Sometimes you can make it stop by pushing down on the back of the motor and getting the gears to catch. The failure usually occurs with a broken blend door that allows the motor to get out of alignment and twist slightly, causing the gears to disengage. Heater Treater will put the system back in alignment and correct this problem.

Important!

Chrysler two different HVAC systems on the early Grand Cherokees. You need to check the application information below carefully to make sure you know which one you have.

There were two main systems used for the GC:

  1. The earlier system has the blend door actuator motor on the bottom of the heater box. The motor is located under the passenger side dash, above the transmission tunnel. Open the passenger door and kneel to look under the dash. You will most likely have to pull back the carpeting on the left side to see the motor. It will be attached to the bottom of the box. A picture from a box that was removed from a GC is shown for reference.

  2. Some XJ’s, particularly the dual control systems used the later design which was continued through 2004. This system has the actuator motor on the front of the box behind the glove box opening. You will need to empty and fully open the glove box to see the motor. On the right side of the box there may be a dampening assembly. Remove this by pulling the attachment up and out. (This is a miki-mauze assembly and was eliminated on later models. Our recommendation is to pull this out and throw it away. Consider this as an upgrade to the older system.)

With the box half open, you will see two black rubber stops inserted into the dash frame. Pull these straight down to remove. Watch carefully how they come out since they have to go back the same way. You can re-insert the stops with the glove box fully open and the glove box will slide past the stops fit properly. The actuator motor is in the upper left hand corner behind the glove box. A picture of the motor is included for reference.

This kit is for the earlier (#1) above system. If you have the second type of system, check our 98-04 Grand Cherokee listing for the correct fix.

Step Three: Get The Solution

The Heater Treater Kit does the following:

  • Replaces the plastic blend doors and axle with stainless steel components.
  • All work is done through the glove box opening and no disassembly of the dash or evacuation of the AC system is required.
  • Tools required are a screw driver, pair of pliers, and a Dremel tool (purchased at any Target or hardware store).
  • Includes detailed instructions and all hardware required to complete the fix, including dremel bits and metal tape to seal the cut.
  • The repair will take about an 90 minutes the first time, and once you have experience, about 45 minutes.
  • No extensive mechanical skills are required.
  • The instructions are dual-level, for mechanics and a “Instructions for Dummies” version.
  • The fix is really easy and MUCH preferable to disassembly of the entire dash and engine cooling systems.
  • We provide customer support via email or phone if required.
  • Further Technical Information available.

Our goal is to make sure that every installation is successful. To date we have achieved 100% success and have no intention of letting up. Heater Treater will solve the problems with the blend door and is over-engineered to outlast your Jeep.

“This Has Been The Best Internet Purchase We Have Ever Made”

“I ordered Heater Treater for my ’02 Jeep Grand Wrangler with a little doubt in my mind. Once we got the part the instructions seemed a bit more complicated than we expected. When we were ready to attack the project we watched the videos…… WOW. With the video you almost don’t need the instructions at all. Worked just like you said it would!!

This has been the best internet purchase we have ever made. We will be telling everyone we know about your product. Easy installation with exceptional results!!!! Definitely worth the price, saved us at least $1500. Thanks!”

The Best $120 I’ve Spent All Year”

“All,

Not only was the Blend Door Fix super easy to install, but it is rock solid, and it works a treat. Definately the best $120 I’ve spent all year!

I was dreading another Winter without a heater so much that I was actually thinking about selling the Jeep and buying a new car….so at the very least you’ve saved me $1000+ for a repair by a mechanic, but you’ve quite possibly saved me about $500 in car payments per month for the next 60 months!”

Many thanks!
Damien

“My Wife Thinks I’m A Hero”

“Thanks for an excellent product. The installation is as easy as your website says it is. It took 1.5 hours from start to finish. If I had to do another, I could do it in about an hour. I used a dremel with a flexible extension and a cutting drill bit, not the cutting wheel. I drilled out the pattern first and then cut. The directions are well thought out and I wouldn’t change a thing.

I called a Jeep dealer a month ago; they gave me a price over $2k.
This is my wife’s car and she thinks I’m a hero for getting her heat because it’s getting cold in NJ now.

Thanks again.
Steve

“Ford Wanted To Charge Me $1600. No Way…”

“I ordered your product for my daughter’s F-150, followed the installation procedures and got the A/C working great. Ford wanted to charge me $1600, no way I was going to spend that money, all Ford had to do is design the system with an access panel to replace the blend door in case of a failure.

You have a great solution, it works great, it took me a couple of hours to finish, half of that time was spent removing that silly diverter vent, once that was out everything went very smooth………..It felt so great.

Thank you so much.”

“Your Directions Are Flawless”

Thank you for sending me the unit so fast. I successfully put it in my Jeep today. Your directions are flawless. They are easy to follow and very detailed, you really put a lot of thought into them. I found the pictures very helpful.

My neighbors came over and were very impressed with your product. They were also impressed with the way I was able to install it myself and save the money and hassle of having to have someone else do it.
If you ever need another testimonial I would love to give one for you.

You have created a great product. I can see someone making a business of installing your product for a lesser cost for those who are not mechanically inclined to do the installation themselves.
Thank you for all of your help. I truely appreciate it.

I can now keep warm because of you.
Thank you and happy holidays :)”
